The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken swift action in response to the alarming surge in phone theft incidents and ransom demands reported in Lagos State. Concerns were raised by Nigerian film director, Biodun Stephen, who highlighted the distressing trend through a video shared on her Instagram page. Victims recounted instances where they were forced to pay to retrieve their stolen phones, leading to increased anxiety and insecurity among residents.
Stephen’s plea for urgent intervention from security agencies and government authorities resonated widely, particularly as she described certain areas in Lagos, including Oshodi, Agege, and Lagos Island, as no-go zones due to the prevalence of phone theft gangs. She emphasized the brazenness of these criminals, who not only snatch phones but also demand ransom payments on the spot.
In response to the viral video, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, assured the public that both the Lagos State Government and the state Police Command would launch investigations into the matter. Adejobi stressed the importance of understanding the situation on the ground to effectively address the issue and ensure the safety and security of residents.
The NPF’s proactive stance underscores its commitment to combating crime and safeguarding communities. By collaborating with relevant authorities and engaging in thorough investigations, the police aim to tackle the root causes of phone theft and uphold law and order in Lagos State.
