Reportedly, a multitude of members from the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, gathered for a procession in Kaduna State on Friday. However, what began as a supposedly peaceful protest in the capital city of Kaduna State escalated into chaos when law enforcement officers, particularly the Nigeria Police, intervened.

Channels Television reported that the Shiites had congregated near the Katsina roundabout along Ahmadu Bello Way before the police arrived to disperse them.

This development has stirred alarm and tension among locals, particularly those with businesses along Ahmadu Bello Way. Many individuals reportedly closed their shops fearing involvement in the ensuing unrest.

In a grim reminder of past clashes, three individuals lost their lives during a confrontation between Shiite members and the Nigerian Police in Kaduna in November 2023. The protest, centered on showing solidarity with Palestine and condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza, began from the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) premises and proceeded to the National Human Rights Commission’s office.

During the demonstration, protesters carried placards and symbolic items representing the casualties of the Israel/Palestine conflict. However, the situation turned violent as police officers dispersed the crowd using tear gas and firing shots into the air.

Aliyu Umar Tirmizi, the leader of the protesters, accused the police of killing two of their members during the clash, highlighting the alleged atrocities committed by the Israeli government in the ongoing conflict.

Contrary to these claims, Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansur Hassan, refuted allegations of police involvement in the deaths of Shiite members. He asserted that IMN members initiated violence against the police, resulting in the unfortunate death of a civilian named Aliyu. According to him, the police were deployed to disperse an illegal protest, emphasizing that IMN is a proscribed organization in Kaduna State.
