Naija News stated that the seven Polish nationals were arrested on August 6 amid escalating violence during the protest against bad governance. They were accused of displaying Russian flags during the demonstration.

Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, announced their release on Wednesday via his X account, confirming that the students and their teacher were now free.

The group, who are students of African Studies at the University of Warsaw’s Oriental Studies Faculty, arrived in Nigeria on August 1 and were scheduled to return to Poland in early September. Polish officials criticized the arrests, noting that the group was in Nigeria solely for academic purposes and was caught up in the wrong situation.

Sikorski assured that the group would soon return to Poland, stating, “I can confirm that they are free, back in Kano with their passports. They have had an unexpected, accelerated lesson in African studies. We hope they will be home soon.
