However, both leaders have denied claims that the meeting was aimed at strategizing against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku, accompanied by notable politicians including Liyel Imoke, Aminu Tambuwal, and Senator Abdul Ningi, engaged in a two-hour discussion with Obasanjo at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.
Though details of the meeting were initially undisclosed, reports suggest that it may be linked to the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking to journalists afterward, both Atiku and Obasanjo maintained that their discussions were not politically motivated.
Talks on a United Opposition for 2027
Insider sources, however, revealed to Nigerian Tribune that the primary agenda centered on forming a broad-based coalition to challenge the APC in 2027.
Atiku reportedly briefed Obasanjo on his ongoing consultations with political leaders across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones to unite the opposition.
This follows Atiku’s recent speech at a national conference in Abuja, where he emphasized the need for a strong, consolidated opposition.
Sources disclosed that Obasanjo, a key political influencer, listened attentively but remained largely neutral during the discussions.
A close associate stated, “Obasanjo made it clear that Atiku was not there to discuss personal ambition but to provide updates on efforts to build a formidable coalition for national progress.”
As Nigeria inches closer to the next election cycle, the meeting signals potential political realignments, with opposition figures seemingly laying the groundwork for 2027.
While Obasanjo has yet to endorse any candidate, his engagement in opposition strategies could significantly impact the electoral landscape.
