Fifty members of the House of Representatives from various regions and political affiliations, known as Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South East, have urged President Bola Tinubu to use constitutional provisions to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from detention. In a three-page letter dated June 19, 2024, the lawmakers emphasized the need for invoking Section 174 of the Nigerian Constitution and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.
The legislators also called upon President Tinubu to initiate a presidential peace initiative aimed at addressing the challenges faced by the southeastern region of Nigeria. They highlighted the region’s current turmoil, citing security breakdowns, economic downturns, displacement of families, and business disruptions as key concerns.
Furthermore, they urged the President to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, to exercise his powers under Section 174(1) of the Constitution and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, to discontinue Kanu’s trial and facilitate his release. They stressed that such actions would promote dialogue over prolonged judicial processes and contribute to peacebuilding, economic recovery, and national unity.
Expressing optimism about President Tinubu’s response, the lawmakers underscored the potential of these actions to enhance his administration’s legacy in fostering peace, inclusivity, and progress across Nigeria.
