Nwauju’s comments come in response to the factional APC chairman Tony Okocha, who claimed that Amaechi and his supporters were no longer members of the party. Okocha had made the statement during a press conference in Port Harcourt, following Amaechi’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Okocha declared that Amaechi had “long jumped the ship” after failed attempts to bring him and his group to meetings, citing their recent outbursts as proof of their departure from the party.

However, Nwauju strongly disagreed, telling Leadership that the Okocha faction lacked the influence to remove Amaechi from the party he helped establish. He accused Okocha’s group of resorting to political crises and damaging reputations to gain relevance.

In his response, Nwauju posed a series of rhetorical questions: “Why is Amaechi’s name the only currency Tony Okocha and his group can trade with? Can Tony Okocha push Amaechi out of a party he labored to build in Rivers State?”
