Political Showdown Looms — INEC Releases Names Of 637 Contenders For FCT 2026 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the personal details of 637 candidates who will be contesting in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The announcement was made on Monday during a press briefing by the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Aminu Kasimu Idris, alongside the Administrative Secretary, Abimbola Oladunjoye.
According to INEC, the publication of candidates’ particulars is in line with Section 29(3) of the 2022 Electoral Act.
The details cover aspirants for both chairmanship and councillorship positions across 68 seats — 6 chairmen and 62 councillors. The records were displayed at the FCT State office and in all six Area Councils, under the supervision of Idris and Oladunjoye.
Addressing journalists, the Resident Electoral Commissioner emphasized the significance of the exercise, urging the public to review the published information to ensure its accuracy. He also advised aspirants from the recently concluded party primaries who may have valid doubts about the details submitted by any candidate to approach the Federal High Court for redress.
In addition, Idris encouraged residents to take advantage of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which officially commenced online today, Monday, August 18, 2025.
