Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has disclosed that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is actively engaging with key political figures, including former ministers and senators, in a bid to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
In an interview with Punch on Sunday, Dalung confirmed that discussions are ongoing with influential politicians nationwide, but he emphasized the need to protect their identities at this stage.
“We are in talks with many prominent figures across the country, including former ministers and senators. The SDP is attracting interest from across political parties,” he stated.
He described the SDP as a rising force in Nigerian politics, not just because of its white horse symbol, but due to its commitment to justice. Dalung lamented that Nigeria had lost its way under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC administrations, arguing that the country must retrace its steps for true democracy to thrive.
He referenced the annulled 1993 election, stressing that SDP’s message of “farewell to poverty” still resonates with many Nigerians today.
Criticism of Tinubu’s Leadership
Dalung also took a swipe at President Tinubu, particularly over the removal of fuel subsidies. He argued that Tinubu’s government lacks popular support, noting that he was elected with only 36% of the vote—the lowest for any Nigerian president.
“In a functioning democracy, INEC should have called for a rerun. Instead, they went ahead and declared Tinubu as president,” Dalung remarked.
He criticized Tinubu’s economic policies, stating that they have led to widespread suffering. “People are hungry and angry. They are getting poorer by the day. That is the real problem,” he warned.
Dalung concluded by stating that if urgent measures are not taken to address Nigeria’s economic and political crises, the country risks descending into chaos.
