In a statement issued on Wednesday, Obi said he was deeply touched after watching a viral video in which Asiya appealed to the President to ensure that her husband receives what she described as fair and just treatment.

During the appeal, Asiya, accompanied by El-Rufai’s other wife, Aichatou, reminded President Tinubu of the political support she and her husband gave him during the 2023 presidential election campaign while urging him to ensure justice is done.

Reacting to the development, Obi said the matter extends beyond the individual involved and raises broader concerns about the administration of justice and the protection of citizens’ rights.

The former Anambra State governor maintained that regardless of the allegations against El-Rufai or any other Nigerian, every accused person is entitled to a transparent legal process, fair treatment and reasonable bail conditions that should not amount to punishment before trial.

According to Obi, Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive when the rule of law is applied impartially and institutions discharge their responsibilities without bias or political influence.

He warned against any perception of selective justice, arguing that such practices could undermine public confidence in the nation’s institutions and weaken national cohesion.

Obi also urged law enforcement agencies and other relevant authorities to conduct their duties professionally and strictly in accordance with due process.

He concluded by calling for a Nigeria where justice, fairness and respect for human dignity remain the guiding principles of governance, describing those values as essential to building the country envisioned by many Nigerians.
