The governors also resolved to contribute a combined ₦1 billion every month to support security operations and strengthen coordinated responses to threats across Northern Nigeria.
The decisions were reached on Wednesday during a strategic security meeting held in Kaduna, which brought together members of the Northern Governors’ Forum, traditional rulers and other key stakeholders.
Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, said the newly established Security Trust Fund is designed to serve as a practical, transparent and results-driven platform for enhancing security coordination throughout the region.
According to him, the initiative is intended to deliver measurable outcomes rather than create another bureaucratic institution.
To oversee the operations of the Trust Fund, the governors constituted a Board of Trustees comprising retired military officers, former security chiefs, senior public officials and experienced administrators from across the Northern states.
The Board will be jointly chaired by former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mahmoud Yayale Ahmed, and former Chief of Defence Staff, Martin Luther Agwai.
Other members include former Chief of Army Staff Umar Farouk Yahaya; former Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha; former Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hafiz Mohammed Inuwa; retired Air Vice Marshals Kabiru Aliyu, Napoleon Bali and Farouk Omeiza Umar; Professor Usman Tar; Major Generals Abdulmalik Dikko, Muhammad Sani, Bello Sarkin Yaki and John Seyina Malu; retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police Sunday Babaji; retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Sani Usman Mohammed; former Head of Service Muhammad Mujtaba Isa; retired Chief Superintendent of Customs Adamu Tanko Umar; former Kaduna State Head of Service Abubakar Mustafa; Katsina State Head of Civil Service Falalu Bawale; and retired Brigadier General Ibrahim Bolakala Agbab.
The governors expressed optimism that the new funding mechanism and the expertise of the board members would strengthen intelligence sharing, improve inter-state collaboration and enhance the region’s capacity to confront banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats.
