The verbal exchange between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the funeral of Herbert Wigwe, CEO of Access Holdings, has sparked a war of words between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State.
During his speech at the funeral in Isiokpo, Governor Fubara, involved in a political rift with his predecessor Nyesom Wike, made a veiled statement about the political turmoil in the state, questioning the motives behind the conflicts. Fubara, who had previously survived an impeachment plot, expressed his willingness to step down as governor for the sake of peace.
In response, Senate President Akpabio addressed Fubara, questioning the purpose of the struggle and advising him not to engage in unnecessary conflicts.
However, the PDP, through its Publicity Secretary, Sydney Gbara, accused Akpabio of ridiculing Governor Fubara and labeled him an enemy of Rivers State. Gbara alleged that Akpabio’s jealousy and anger stemmed from the positive reception Fubara received from the audience. The PDP spokesman highlighted Akpabio’s history of disrespect and disdain towards Governor Fubara, accusing him of exploiting the political impasse in the state to fuel crises for personal gain.
The PDP emphasized that Akpabio’s actions were detrimental to the state and accused him of taking advantage of the political situation to further his own agenda. The party called attention to Akpabio’s previous disrespectful remarks at public functions in Rivers State and condemned his behavior as embarrassing and harmful to the well-being of the state.
The exchange between the two political figures has escalated tensions between the APC and PDP in Rivers State, with both parties trading accusations and criticizing each other’s actions and motives.
