Sources within political circles who spoke with Saturday Sun described Obasa’s removal as a “palace coup,” fueling speculations that elements within Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration may be working to undermine Tinubu’s political dominance in Lagos.
Top Official Allegedly Behind Obasa’s Ouster
A high-ranking official in the Sanwo-Olu administration (name withheld) is suspected to have orchestrated the move.
According to a reliable source, “The National Leader (Tinubu) believes Sanwo-Olu alone could not have plotted and executed Obasa’s removal so discreetly—it had to involve someone else.”
The source added that the suspected official, believed to be eyeing the governorship seat, is now under close watch by Tinubu’s camp.
Traditional Rulers’ Influence and Power Struggle
Another major factor is the growing influence of traditional rulers in Lagos. The new Speaker, a sister to the current Kabiyesi Oniru, has further strengthened their presence in governance.
“The traditional rulers have long sought greater influence in Lagos politics. Keeping Madam Speaker in power could establish a new political bloc within the traditional system—something Tinubu is unwilling to allow,” the source noted.
Insiders fear the new Speaker may not challenge Sanwo-Olu as fiercely as Obasa once confronted former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
Obasa’s Removal Sparks Concerns Over Lagos Assembly’s Stability
Tinubu’s allies view Obasa’s ouster as a sign of deep cracks within the Lagos Assembly’s power structure, raising concerns about emerging threats to his political grip on the state.
