Obi, known for his outspoken views on Nigeria’s political landscape, declared that the country’s governance had reached a breaking point, lamenting the collapse of democracy. He said, “Democracy has collapsed in Nigeria. Everything has been knocked down. We are in a situation where we should stop lamenting and start rebuilding.”

He pointed to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, particularly the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the state assembly, as clear evidence of the nation’s failing democratic institutions. Obi argued that such incidents reflected a deeper breakdown of the rule of law and democratic governance.

In response to Obi’s critical remarks, Onanuga took to (formerly Twitter) to dismiss the claims as exaggerated and unfounded. He argued that while Nigeria faces political challenges, Obi’s characterization of the country’s democracy as collapsed was misleading and sensational.

Onanuga urged Obi to be more careful with his words, stating, “I listened multiple times to former Governor Peter Obi’s statement, where he claims that democracy has collapsed in Nigeria. His hyperbolic remarks, suited for headlines, lack deep reflection and logical foundation. How can a democracy that has strengthened over the past 26 years be said to have collapsed? Only a discontented Peter, who benefits from the very free speech democracy provides, could see a democratic downfall through such a lens.”

He added, “If democracy had truly collapsed, as Peter claims, and we were living under a regime that opposed democratic principles, he wouldn’t have been able to make his comments at the colloquium. I urge him to watch what he says and refrain from making exaggerated statements for attention.”
