Presidency Reacts As Tinubu Returns From Saudi Arabia Amid 2027 Political Speculation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Abuja after completing his visit to Saudi Arabia, where he performed the Umrah pilgrimage, also known as the Lesser Hajj, in the holy city of Makkah.

The President’s aircraft arrived in the nation’s capital at approximately 8:53 p.m. local time on Wednesday, with several top government officials present to receive him at the airport.

Those who welcomed the President included his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mattawale, the Minister of Education, Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and other government representatives.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Tinubu’s return followed his religious visit to Saudi Arabia, which had attracted public attention amid discussions about its possible political implications ahead of the 2027 general election.

However, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, Ademola Oshodi, has dismissed suggestions that the pilgrimage was intended to secure political support from voters in Northern Nigeria.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oshodi argued that the President’s visit should be viewed from a religious and national perspective rather than through the lens of regional politics.

He explained that Tinubu’s access to the Holy Kaaba was significant to Muslims across Nigeria and should not be interpreted as an attempt to appeal to a particular section of the country.

Oshodi maintained that public opinion in Nigeria was diverse and that the religious significance of the pilgrimage extended beyond geographical or political divisions.

He also described the opportunity granted to Tinubu as particularly meaningful to Muslims in the South-West, noting that it represented an important moment for the region.

The presidential aide further disclosed that Tinubu had performed both Umrah and the Hajj on several occasions throughout his life, insisting that the latest visit was not politically motivated.

He therefore urged Nigerians to appreciate the religious significance of the President’s pilgrimage rather than interpret it solely in connection with the forthcoming 2027 elections.
