President Tinubu Appoints New Chairman for North West Development Commission (NWDC), Nominates Leadership for South East Development Commission (SEDC)

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Alhaji Lawal Samai’la Abdullahi as the new chairman of the North West Development Commission (NWDC), with the nomination pending Senate approval. The announcement was made on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

The appointment of Abdullahi is part of a broader reshuffling of the NWDC’s leadership. In a modified list sent to the Senate, Tinubu also restructured the Commission’s inaugural Governing Board, replacing several earlier nominees. Ambassador Haruna Ginsau, Senator Tijani Yahaya Kaura, and Hon. Abdulkadir S. Usman, who were initially nominated, have been replaced by Ja’afar Abubakar Sadeeq and Yahaya Aminu Abdulhadi. Abdullahi Shehu Ma’aji retains his role as Managing Director and CEO.

The new list, which is subject to Senate approval, also includes other key members, such as Dr. Yahaya Umar Namahe, Engr. Muhammad Ali Wudil, and Shamsu Sule. In line with a recent Senate adjustment to the NWDC’s establishment act, Tinubu has nominated representatives from all six geo-political zones, including Chukwu Chijioke, Ahmed Mohammed, Engr. Ahmed Rufai Timasaniyu, and others.

Additionally, President Tinubu has nominated Hon. Emeka Atuma as Chairman and Hon. Mark C. Okoye as Managing Director/CEO for the South East Development Commission (SEDC), with both nominations also subject to Senate approval. The SEDC’s new board members include Barr. Ugochukwu H. Agballah, Hon. Okey Ezenwa, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, and others.

Among the SEDC nominees are Prince Obinna Obiekweihe as Executive Director (Projects), Senator Anthony O. Agbo as Executive Director, Finance and Administration, and Dr. Daniel Ikechukwu Ugwuja as Executive Director (Corporate Services).

In his statement, President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to fostering regional development. He urged the new appointees to leverage their expertise to advance the mandates of both the NWDC and SEDC, ensuring the sustainable growth of their respective regions.
