Nevertheless, the elimination of the fuel subsidy has resulted in considerable adverse consequences for both urban and rural citizens.

Among the ramifications of the subsidy removal are escalated transportation expenses due to elevated fuel prices, a surge in food inflation, heightened food insecurity, and an increase in poverty levels.

The amplified cost of transportation has further exacerbated food insecurity, compelling consumers to grapple with elevated meal costs.

In response to the mounting challenges in food availability and pricing across the nation’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), President Tinubu convened a meeting with stakeholders in the agriculture and food production value chain on July 13. During this session, he declared a state of emergency concerning food security in the country.

Through his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communication, and Strategy, Dele Alake, President Tinubu unveiled a comprehensive action plan aimed at bolstering food security, stabilizing food prices, and ensuring sustainability.

Alake highlighted the strategy’s components, including the immediate distribution of fertilizers and grains to farmers and households to alleviate the repercussions of the subsidy elimination.

To actualize the President’s directive, Alake delineated a range of initiatives to be executed in the short, medium, and long terms.

These initiatives encompass year-round farming, the establishment of specialized entities like commodity boards to enhance the food production value chain, rapid activation of land banks nationwide, and the transformation of traditional nomadic animal husbandry into government-managed ranching.

Alake stressed that the current administration would collaborate with the nation’s security apparatus to safeguard farms and farmers, enabling them to return to agricultural activities without the fear of attacks.

Furthermore, the government intends to collaborate with mechanization firms to clear additional forested areas for agricultural use, thereby expanding arable land.
