President Tinubu Hails Wole Soyinka At 91, Celebrates His Enduring Legacy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has celebrated Africa’s first Nobel Laureate in Literature, Professor Wole Soyinka, on the occasion of his 91st birthday, describing him as a national treasure and global inspiration.
In a statement released by the State House and signed by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extolled Soyinka’s legacy as a prolific writer, human rights crusader, and towering intellectual figure whose works have shaped generations of minds across the world.
“Professor Soyinka is a globally acclaimed literary icon, activist, cultural ambassador, and public intellectual,” the President noted. “His artistic genius is reflected in his plays, poems, memoirs, essays, and enduring contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political evolution.”
Tinubu highlighted the Nobel Laureate’s decades-long involvement in education, cultural diplomacy, democracy advocacy, and nation-building, stressing his pivotal role in influencing public discourse and inspiring change.
“Even at 91, Professor Soyinka continues to be a beacon of wisdom and a source of inspiration—not only to Nigerians but to younger writers and thinkers across the globe who draw from his deep well of knowledge and creativity,” the President said.
Reflecting on his personal bond with the literary icon, President Tinubu spoke of his appreciation for their shared history and commitment to national development.
“I rejoice with Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on reaching another year and praise his continuing service and contributions to our nation’s development,” the statement read. “Professor Soyinka is an uncommon patriot whose enduring love for Nigeria remains evident in his unrelenting advocacy and contributions to humanity.”
President Tinubu concluded his tribute by wishing Soyinka good health and more fruitful years as he journeys further into what he described as “the last decade of his centennial.”
Professor Wole Soyinka, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential intellectuals.
