“As part of a comprehensive initiative to curtail the expenses of governance in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to suspend the visa application process for all government officials seeking to travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, unless they can provide evidence of direct participation in UNGA’s official schedule of events.
The President has also mandated that government officials not included in the protocol lists provided by the relevant approving authority should not receive accreditation, and the Permanent Mission in New York has been instructed to cease such actions immediately.
Furthermore, Mr. Tinubu has instructed that the American Embassy in Nigeria be given proper guidelines regarding the handling of official visa requests.
The President has additionally requested that officials from federal ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) who endorsed the UNGA delegation exercise caution in permitting the inclusion of assistants and auxiliary staff.
In this context, he emphasized that any irregularities discovered will be rectified during the final certification phase.
“Through this directive, all Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies are mandated to ensure that officials included in the UNGA delegation significantly limit the number of assistants and support staff participating in the event.
Any instances of excesses or anomalies in this regard will be rectified during the final verification process.
The President reaffirmed that henceforth, government officials and expenses must reflect the prudence and sacrifice being embraced by well-intentioned Nigerians across the nation.
