A memo issued by the Federal Ministry of Aviation on June 1, 2023, announced the renaming, stating it was part of ongoing reforms in the aviation sector. The Maiduguri Airport has been renamed after former President Muhammadu Buhari, while the Port Harcourt Airport now honors the late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo. The Nasarawa Airport is named after the esteemed founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, Usman Dan Fodio. Other renamings include the Benin Airport in honor of the late Oba of Benin, Oba Akenzua II, and the Ebonyi Airport after the late Senate President Chuba Okadigbo. Additionally, the Ibadan Airport is now named after the late Premier of the old Western Region, Ladoke Akintola.
