“The judiciary is a vital pillar of our constitutional democracy. Throughout our history, the Nigerian judiciary has served as a moderating force, ensuring that all parties are held accountable,” President Tinubu stated. “As the last hope of the common man, your role sustains public confidence in democracy, providing an important avenue for redress when individuals feel wronged.”
He emphasized the necessity of judicial independence, affirming, “It is my administration’s total commitment to preserve the sanctity of the judiciary. While we may collaborate as integral parts of the government, we will respect the clear boundaries between our roles. We will never interfere with or abuse the relationship between our distinct branches of government, as this is essential for maintaining our constitutional democracy.”
President Tinubu also reiterated his government’s dedication to enhancing the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers, highlighting recent initiatives aimed at improving their effectiveness in administering justice. He urged Justice Kekere-Ekun to uphold the principles of ethical leadership, courage, and integrity that have characterized her career, stating, “The Nigerian judiciary requires a leader with these qualities at this critical time, and I have no doubt that you will set a benchmark for others to emulate.”
The President praised Justice Kekere-Ekun’s ascent as a testament to hard work and an inspiration for women, especially young girls, in a traditionally male-dominated field. “Today marks a significant moment for the judiciary as a progressive and self-evolving institution. I congratulate Nigerian women, showing that any girl can dream big and achieve her aspirations. This is a day worth celebrating,” Tinubu added.
He also acknowledged the presence of Justice Kekere-Ekun’s 89-year-old mother, Mama Wilfred Layiwola Ogundimu (Nee Savage), along with other family members, including her husband, Akin Kekere-Ekun.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja, attended by four former Chief Justices of the Federation, including Aloma Mukhtar, the first female Chief Justice.
