Presidential Honour: Tinubu To Host WAFCON Queens After Historic Triumph

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to host the victorious Super Falcons at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, in recognition of their remarkable triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Falcons clinched their 10th continental title after defeating host nation Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses in a gripping final in Rabat, further solidifying Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.

The reception at the Villa is part of a series of celebrations organized to commend the team’s tenacity and exceptional performance throughout the tournament.

Upon arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the Falcons were warmly received by Governors Uba Sani (Kaduna), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), and Hope Uzodimma (Imo), along with several federal ministers.

The team’s return sparked nationwide jubilation, as fans praised their discipline, unity, and unrelenting fighting spirit that led to the historic win.

Four Nigerian players — Rasheedat Ajibade, Esther Okoronkwo, Michelle Alozie, and Chiamaka Nnadozie — were named in the WAFCON Best XI, a testament to the team’s dominance in the competition.

Ajibade stood out as a tournament star, being named Player of the Tournament and Woman of the Match in three of Nigeria’s six fixtures. Her influence and attacking prowess were key to the team’s success.

Okoronkwo also made her mark with two goals and four assists, playing a crucial role in the Falcons’ title-winning campaign.

Nnadozie, with four clean sheets, was awarded Best Goalkeeper, reinforcing her reputation as one of Africa’s finest shot-stoppers.

Alozie, who played every minute of the tournament, earned her spot on the Best XI for her rock-solid defensive contributions.
