The plan is unfolding in phases and appears to be contingent upon developments surrounding the 2023 presidential election tribunal, where the legitimacy of President Bola Tinubu’s victory is under dispute.

Initial discussions between Atiku and Kwankwaso are said to have paved the way for further negotiations. Following the favorable outcome of these preliminary dialogues, a subsequent meeting involving Peter Obi and other key players in the PDP began to take shape.

This collaborative effort seems to revolve around two main strategies:

  1. Outcome of Presidential Election Petitions: The trio is said to be awaiting the outcome of the presidential election petitions currently in court. If the tribunal rules in a manner favorable to their cause, there’s contemplation of aligning forces for a potential re-election or rerun, which would enable them to join forces against Tinubu and the APC.
  2. Plan for 2027: Alternatively, should the tribunal’s decision not favor their aspirations, the opposition leaders are considering laying the groundwork for a powerful political party in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This party would serve as a unifying platform for not only the three leaders but also their respective parties and supporters, with the ultimate goal of wresting control from the APC.

A source familiar with the discussions stated, “The meeting started with Kwankwaso and Atiku and they have agreed to bring Peter Obi in to set up a formidable opposition after the court cases.

Although they have not got to the point of discussing who will lead the opposition, they are leaving it out for now till after the court cases. After the court cases, they will plan and come together for a re-election or stand together ahead to fight the 2027 election battle. They are considering a formidable party comprising the PDP, Labour and NNPP.”
