The President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has proposed a significant overhaul of Nigeria’s identity, advocating for renaming the nation as ‘The United States of Nigeria.’ This suggestion emerged during a lecture where Adesina was honored with the 2024 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership, as disclosed by his Special Adviser on Industrialization, Prof. Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka.
In his address titled ‘Making a New Nigeria: Welfarist Policies and People-Centred Development,’ Adesina outlined a vision for reshaping the country’s governance structure towards a more decentralized model. He asserted that adopting the proposed name would redefine the relationship between Nigeria’s states and the central government in Abuja, positioning states as vital entities within the federation, with the central government assuming a supportive role rather than a dominant one.
Adesina emphasized the necessity of audacity in embracing change, highlighting the potential for improved governance, enhanced accountability, and reduced corruption under this new framework. He stressed the importance of unity and collaboration across all sectors of society, from rural villages to urban centers, and from small businesses to large corporations, to realize the vision of a revitalized Nigeria.
Furthermore, Adesina underscored the importance of constitutional reforms to empower states or regions economically and financially, emphasizing that stronger states would contribute to a more robust national entity. He reiterated that restructuring should be driven not by political considerations but by economic and financial imperatives to navigate Nigeria out of its economic challenges.
Overall, Adesina’s proposal signifies a bold step towards redefining Nigeria’s identity and governance structure to foster greater prosperity and unity across the nation.
