Protest Demands: Key Actions President Tinubu Needs To Take – Former Minister

He advised the President to interact with the public directly rather than through intermediaries and to initiate an immediate investigation into the deaths of unarmed protesters caused by security forces.

Nweke, who previously ran for governor with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Enugu, also urged Tinubu to reduce governance costs and intensify efforts to combat corruption. He called for the federal government to ensure state governors fulfill their responsibilities effectively.

On his X handle, Nweke wrote, “The President should engage directly with Nigerians and address their concerns, avoiding distant surrogates. An immediate investigation into the reported killings is crucial, and those responsible must be held accountable.”

He further recommended that Tinubu take decisive steps to cut governance expenses, lower public officials’ salaries, and tackle corruption earnestly. He emphasized the need for state governments to be held accountable, especially given the significant increase in federal allocations following the subsidy removal.

Additionally, Nweke urged the federal government to establish mechanisms to ensure local governments are held accountable for providing essential services, following the ruling on the unconstitutionality of state governors handling local government funds.

Finally, he suggested that Tinubu foster national dialogue by involving prominent citizens to facilitate discussions between the government and the public, aiming to build a consensus on the nation’s future direction.
