Protesters from the Edo State Civil Society Organisation (EDOSCO) gathered in Benin on Wednesday to demand decisive action from the Federal Government, urging an end to the ongoing suffering of Nigerians. Kola Edokpayi, a prominent leader within EDOSCO, expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs during a rally organized by the group.
“We unequivocally reject the current form of democracy practiced in our country. It does not serve the interests of the people; instead, it works against them,” Edokpayi declared. “Amidst pervasive poverty, hardship, and unemployment, we cannot remain silent any longer.”
He emphasized the urgent need for national improvement, highlighting widespread frustration among the populace. “Today, we march to voice our grievances over the state of our nation. The masses are drowning in the grip of hunger, poverty, and economic decline,” he lamented, pointing to leadership failures contributing to these crises.
Edokpayi also drew attention to regional unrest, underscoring the consequences of neglecting citizens’ welfare. “The recent agitation for self-determination in the Southeast reflects a broader discontent within our nation,” he warned.
“The current administration has faltered profoundly. Our leaders travel abroad and witness effective governance models, yet fail to replicate them here,” Edokpayi criticized. “We call upon the government to alleviate the suffering of the masses and enact policies that genuinely uplift Nigerians.”
He stressed specific demands for immediate action: “Provide employment opportunities, create a conducive environment for investors, tackle insecurity, and address the chronic power problem. Why escalate tariffs when electricity supply remains sporadic? The cycle of suffering must end to prevent further unrest among the populace.”
In conclusion, Edokpayi urged comprehensive reforms to restore hope and dignity to Nigerians. “The solutions are within reach. It is time for our leaders to act decisively before the people’s patience runs out,” he asserted passionately.
