Reactions

Chukwudi Emeka took to Twitter to express his dismay:

“It’s disheartening to see that in 2023, we are still grappling with tribal and state-based discrimination. Medicine is universal. A doctor from Sokoto can treat a patient in Anambra. We are all Nigerians!”

Uchechi Ibe opined:

“While I understand the essence of prioritizing indigenes in state schemes, I believe the health sector shouldn’t be limited by such. We need the best hands, irrespective of state origin.”

On the flip side, some saw the decision from a different perspective.

Amara Nwosu shared on her Instagram story:

“Every state has its policies. Maybe Anambra wants to ensure its people have jobs. We complain about unemployment, yet criticize when steps are taken.”

Ndubuisi Kanu said during a TV interview:

“It’s crucial to remember that states have autonomy to an extent. They can decide what’s best for them. However, I hope this move doesn’t deter non-indigene doctors from serving in Anambra in other capacities.”

The decision by the Anambra State Primary Health Care Agency has indeed opened a Pandora’s box of discussions on the essence and implications of state of origin in Nigeria’s socio-political and economic landscape. While many await a possible review or further clarification from the agency, the discourse continues.
