Benue State has officially banned public events from being held beyond 10 pm, as per a new executive order signed by Governor Hyacinth Alia on May 25, 2024………..CONTINUE READING

This order makes it illegal for families to organize wakes past 10 pm. Additionally, the state has prohibited farming on unfenced plots, streets, roadsides within urban areas, undeveloped government properties, and organizing rallies beyond 10 pm.

Governor Alia established the Department of Public Order within the Ministry of Justice to oversee and enforce these policies. The decision aims to curb criminal activities and political violence, including kidnappings, murders, and intimidation by local warlords and militia groups.

At the signing ceremony in Makurdi, Governor Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Sam Odeh, emphasized adherence to these laws. Violations will result in fines ranging from N20,000 to N500,000 or imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offense. Those wishing to hold events beyond 10 pm must obtain a permit from the Department of Public Order.

The governor also announced the creation of a Public Order Advisory Committee to advise on maintaining public order and a Public Order Committee to operate in all local government areas, ensuring enforcement in collaboration with other stakeholders
