In a bid to help restore peace, the group announced plans to set up a reconciliation committee that will engage with the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other key stakeholders involved in the ongoing political crisis.
Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Friday, May 9, the group’s chairman, Altraide Itekena, voiced concern over the political unrest, noting its adverse impact on governance and the welfare of persons with disabilities, who he said have been largely ignored during the conflict.
“We support the President’s decision to declare a state of emergency and suspend the legislative and executive arms in Rivers State — but only within the constitutionally allowed six-month duration,” Itekena stated.
He added that a five-member committee would be formed to mediate between Governor Fubara, members of the legislature, Chief Nyesom Wike, and other authorities, including Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), the Sole Administrator, as well as the leadership of the National Assembly and the presidency.
Itekena also affirmed the group’s commitment to supporting Vice Admiral Ibas in carrying out his mandate and urged him to stay neutral while ensuring that PWDs are included in governance and recognized as special beneficiaries under the interim administration.
