Red Cross Expresses Alarm: We Are Overwhelmed By Current Crisis

The Nigerian Red Cross Society has raised concerns about the increasing frequency of floods and other disasters, emphasizing the need for more volunteers and resources despite having a substantial volunteer base. During the 2024 annual fundraising gala in Lagos, President Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga highlighted that the society has over 800,000 volunteers across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Adeaga explained that the distribution of volunteers across the states leaves them under-resourced for effective disaster response. “Dividing these volunteers among the states shows we are far from our capacity to tackle these issues,” he said. He pointed out that while Borno State has received significant attention, many other states are also suffering from flooding.

He urged everyone to join the Nigerian Red Cross Society, emphasizing the importance of volunteerism over financial contributions: “This is a noble call. It doesn’t take money to do good.” Adeaga also mentioned the extensive humanitarian needs in areas like Maiduguri and other regions, highlighting the overwhelming number of challenges they face.

In addition to financial donations, he appealed for human and infrastructural resources, stating, “Our mission is to alleviate suffering in disaster-affected areas.”

Karsten Voigt, Country Manager of the British Red Cross, supported Adeaga’s call, noting the difficult conditions under which the Nigerian Red Cross operates. He urged the public to assist the society and advocated for preventive measures in disaster management, highlighting collaborative efforts with various stakeholders.
