Reece James Breaks Silence After Chelsea’s Arsenal Defeat, Highlights Positives

Published

Chelsea captain Reece James has highlighted the positives from the club’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Chelsea made a strong start to the encounter, with summer signing Morgan Rogers putting the visitors ahead just two minutes into the match. Arsenal, however, responded through former Chelsea forward Kai Havertz before captain Martin Ødegaard completed the comeback to hand the Gunners their third consecutive league victory.

Despite surrendering their early advantage, James praised Chelsea’s overall performance and said the team demonstrated character in attempting to fight their way back into the contest.

The defender acknowledged that matches at the highest level are often decided by small moments and said the Blues would analyse the defeat and learn from their mistakes.

James also spoke about Chelsea’s ongoing adaptation to their manager’s tactical approach, stressing that the squad is still becoming accustomed to the manager’s methods and expectations. He said the players remain committed to improving and implementing the desired style of play.

When asked whether Chelsea could challenge Arsenal for the Premier League title, James avoided making an early prediction, insisting that the team should concentrate on its own progress rather than being distracted by other clubs.

He said Chelsea would assess their position at the end of the season and remain focused on doing what is required to achieve their objectives.

Rogers’ early strike also saw Chelsea make Premier League history, with the Blues becoming the first team in the competition to score within the opening five minutes of each of their first three matches of a season.

Chelsea had previously scored inside the opening minute during their 3-2 victory over Fulham before taking another early lead against Brighton and Hove Albion in a 4-3 win, with Romero Lavia finding the net in the fourth minute.

Meanwhile, the defeat extended Chelsea’s difficult recent record against Arsenal. The Blues have not defeated the Gunners in a Premier League fixture since their 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium on August 22, 2021, when Romelu Lukaku and James scored.

Arsenal have now gone unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League meetings with Chelsea and have avoided defeat in their last 12 encounters against the Blues across all competitions.
