Reece James Ruled Out Until 2027? Chelsea Captain Set For Lengthy Injury Layoff
Chelsea captain Reece James is expected to be sidelined for approximately three months following knee surgery, a setback that could keep the defender out of action until 2027.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the 26-year-old sustained the injury during training on October 9, shortly before Chelsea’s 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea confirmed on Friday that James had undergone successful minor surgery on his knee but did not provide a specific recovery timeline. However, reports indicate that the England international is unlikely to return to action before the end of 2026.
Head coach Xabi Alonso was expected to provide an update on the defender’s condition during his pre-match press conference on October 16, ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League trip to Everton on Saturday.
James’ latest injury represents another setback for the right-back, who has struggled with recurring fitness problems throughout his career. His anticipated absence could see him miss several important fixtures, including home matches against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Liverpool, as well as an away encounter with Manchester City.
The Chelsea academy graduate enjoyed a relatively consistent campaign last season, making 29 Premier League appearances, his highest tally since the 2020/21 season.
His performances also earned him a place in England’s squad for the World Cup. However, a hamstring injury during the tournament forced him to miss three matches before he recovered in time to start England’s semi-final defeat against Argentina.
Before suffering the latest knee injury, James had made six appearances for Chelsea this season, including three starts in the Premier League.
In March 2026, the defender signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea, reaffirming his long-term commitment to the club. His expected absence will nevertheless be a significant concern for the team as it prepares for a demanding run of fixtures.
