Relief At The Pumps: Dangote Cuts Petrol Price, Launches Free Fuel Giveaway

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced that its highly anticipated free fuel distribution programme will officially commence on Monday, September 15, 2025, beginning in Lagos, other South-West states, the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Delta, Rivers, and Edo.

Group spokesperson Anthony Chiejina, in a statement to Punch on Thursday, confirmed the rollout:

“We are starting the free fuel distribution scheme on Monday. The first phase will cover Lagos, the South-West, Abuja, Kwara, Delta, Rivers, and Edo States. A price drop will also take effect on the same day the free distribution begins.”

As part of the scheme, the refinery announced a slash in petrol pump prices. Fuel will now sell at ₦841 per litre in Lagos and the South-West, while Abuja, Edo, Kwara, Rivers, and Delta will see a price of ₦851 per litre. Both the price cut and the free fuel scheme will kick off simultaneously.

The programme, initially slated for August but delayed due to logistics challenges in China, is now ready following the delivery of over 1,000 trucks to support distribution. More states are expected to be added once additional trucks arrive in Nigeria.

In a related move, Dangote revealed it is rolling out 10,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks this year to lower logistics costs and boost domestic fuel distribution. Despite a recent spike in CNG prices, the company assured that its rollout plan remains on course.
