The call to action was made during the opening ceremony of a two-day training on Drug Prevention Treatment and Care organized by the NDLEA specifically for the spouses of state governors. Senator Tinubu, represented by Elizabeth Egbetokun, the wife of the Inspector General of Police, commended the NDLEA and the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum for their collaborative initiative.
Acknowledging drug abuse as a public health crisis requiring a compassionate and comprehensive response, Senator Tinubu stressed the importance of challenging stigma associated with addiction and fostering a culture of empathy. She emphasized the significant role that governors’ spouses play in combating drug abuse through advocacy and the implementation of evidence-based strategies.
The AGF, Fagbemi, SAN, praised the NDLEA’s resourcefulness in leveraging the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum to extend the drug war to grassroots and community levels. He recognized the attendees’ critical role in shaping policies and practices at the community level.
NDLEA Chairman Marwa emphasized the devastating effects of substance abuse on public health, the environment, and its connection to the country’s insecurity. He highlighted the necessity of a whole-of-society approach and commended the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign initiated by the NDLEA since 2021.
Marwa urged governors’ wives to mobilize support for drug prevention and treatment in their states, emphasizing collaboration with NDLEA officers and commanders. Additionally, he mentioned the agency’s alternative development plan to discourage cannabis farmers from illicit cultivation.
In closing, Marwa encouraged collective efforts to effect meaningful change and create healthier, safer communities in the ongoing battle against illicit drugs.
