Rent Crisis Claims Life: Man Takes Own Life Due To Unpaid N60,000 Rent

A man in his mid-30s, known as Baale or Radical within his community, tragically ended his life after facing eviction from his apartment due to unpaid rent. Baale, a resident of a single-room apartment on Moshalashi Road, Egan, in Lagos State’s Igando area, reportedly took his life on Sunday night by ingesting a poisonous substance suspected to be insecticide.

According to sources who preferred anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, Baale had confided in his wife about the mounting pressure he faced when their landlord issued a notice to vacate the premises due to their inability to pay the increased rent, which rose from N35,000 to N60,000 annually.

The situation escalated after an altercation between Baale and his wife, stemming from the stress of the impending eviction. Witnesses reported that Baale contacted a friend, expressing his intent to commit suicide with the insecticide he held. The friend intervened, alerting Baale’s wife and seeking help.

Efforts were made to stabilize Baale upon arrival at the hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to the effects of the poison. He leaves behind his wife and four children.

Despite attempts to reach the wife for comment, she declined. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that no official report had been received yet from the area’s Divisional Police Officer.

This incident sheds light on the dire consequences of financial strain and housing insecurity faced by many in Nigeria.
