Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, the House of Representatives member for Kaduna North Constituency, has called for the elimination of certain recurring expenditures by ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

During the debate on the 2025 budget on Wednesday, Bello El-Rufai emphasized that MDAs should not continue to include the purchase of vehicles and furniture in their budgets year after year.

He argued that many items, such as vehicles and utensils, that are included in the recurrent expenditures of MDAs for the 2024 budget should not be part of the 2025 budget. He pointed out that some expenses, like vehicle purchases, should be cut, as vehicles do not “expire” and can last beyond a single year.

He said, “The recurrent issue is in every budget. Even as a young person, we budget for vehicles and utensils every year. We need to address these issues to plug financial loopholes in ministries’ budgets. If a ministry bought vehicles last year, they don’t need to buy them again this year.”

Bello El-Rufai also called for the implementation of the Orasanye report, stressing the need for greater financial discipline in government spending, especially given the current economic hardship in the country. He highlighted that the annual inclusion of new computers and furniture in the budget is wasteful, as these items do not have an expiration date.

He added, “We can’t ask Nigerians to endure hardship while we, as leaders, continue to waste funds. We need to cut out unnecessary expenditures, such as the yearly purchase of utensils, and focus on real fiscal reforms.”

Lastly, he urged committee chairmen to scrutinize the budgets more closely, noting that Nigerians are tired of seeing agencies buy items like forks and knives every year.
