....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a bold move that has ignited nationwide debate, Hon. Esosa Iyawe, representing Oredo Federal Constituency in Edo State, has vehemently condemned the Nigerian Postal Service’s (NIPOST) imposition of a ₦270,000 annual registration fee on dispatch riders. Highlighting the policy’s detrimental impact, Iyawe emphasized that such exorbitant charges threaten the livelihoods of young entrepreneurs and small business owners who rely on logistics services to sustain their operations .
The lawmaker’s petition to the House of Representatives calls for the establishment of a committee to investigate NIPOST’s registration policy, which not only mandates the hefty annual fee but also imposes a ₦320,000 penalty on defaulters. Iyawe described these fees as “outrageous” and lacking a proper legal foundation, urging the House to intervene swiftly by reviewing the policy and engaging with key stakeholders to develop a more equitable regulatory framework for the logistics industry in Edo State .
The Broader Impact:
Youth Employment: The steep fees could force many young dispatch riders out of business, exacerbating unemployment rates in the region.
Small Businesses: SMEs that depend on affordable logistics services may face increased operational costs, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers.
Economic Growth: Such policies may deter innovation and entrepreneurship, stifling economic development in Edo State and beyond.
As the House deliberates on this pressing issue, stakeholders across the logistics sector and civil society await decisive action to ensure that regulatory policies support, rather than hinder, economic growth and innovation.
