Zuwaira Gambo, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in the state, made this assertion during a public event organized by the Maiduguri-based non-governmental organization, Allamin Foundation, supported by UKAID. The event focused on the presentation of survivors, victims, and deradicalized women of Boko Haram.

Gambo, whose ministry oversees the affairs of ex-combatants and rescued captives, revealed that out of the 160,000 repentant insurgents, 70,000 have been successfully resettled and reintegrated into their communities, as reported by Punch.

Emphasizing the significance of the oath taken on the Quran, Gambo assured the public that the former terrorists would not revert to violence.

Addressing concerns about the resurgence of terrorism in the Northeast, Gambo dismissed the notion that repentant terrorists were reneging on their commitment and returning to violence. She affirmed the transparent process of repentance and reintegration, stating, “It is completely untrue that the repentant Boko Haram fighters are reneging on their repentance and returning to the bush to continue fighting.”

Gambo further elaborated on the rigorous process of ensuring the commitment of the repentant insurgents. Each individual undergoes a solemn oath-taking ceremony with the Holy Quran in the presence of a committee comprising traditional rulers, religious leaders, and government officials.

She stressed the gravity of breaking the oath sworn on the Quran, indicating that any violator would face severe consequences. According to Gambo, “No repentant Boko Haram dare renege on the oath because he or she knows what it means to swear with the Holy Quran and renege.”

Additionally, Gambo clarified that a significant portion of the repentant insurgents were originally farmers who were coerced into joining the insurgency and were not active combatants.

While addressing the demands outlined in the survivors’ and victims’ charter, Gambo assured that the state government would carefully consider and act upon them. This charter encompasses various demands from government entities, security agencies, NGOs, media, traditional and religious leaders, community members, and other stakeholders aimed at facilitating the rehabilitation and prosperity of those affected by the insurgency.
