The House of Representatives, in conjunction with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has decided to temporarily lift the ban on the sale and consumption of sachet alcoholic beverages. This decision follows discussions between the House Committee and NAFDAC officials aimed at addressing economic realities and regulatory concerns.
Philip Agbese, the deputy spokesman of the House, confirmed this development during a briefing in Abuja. The ban was initially imposed due to concerns over drug abuse, particularly among young Nigerians. However, after deliberations with stakeholders and considering economic challenges exacerbated by factors like COVID-19, the decision was made to suspend the ban temporarily.
Agbese emphasized that the move respects citizens’ rights to choose and reflects adjustments to global norms, while also noting that further details on the temporary lift will be finalized by July. He addressed concerns over health risks, arguing that similar products sold in bottles carry comparable risks, and highlighted objections from low-income earners who viewed the ban as infringing upon their rights.
The House had earlier mandated its NAFDAC committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the ban, ultimately endorsing a temporary suspension until economic conditions improve.
