In a post shared via his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi condemned Trump’s comments as a “grave insult to Nigeria’s sovereignty”, warning that such remarks should not be dismissed or ignored by the Federal Government.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign nation with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority — but we can rise above it,” he stated.
Gumi’s remarks follow Trump’s controversial declaration that reclassified Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over alleged persecution of Christians — a move that has reignited diplomatic unease between Abuja and Washington.
The cleric called on President Tinubu to immediately summon the U.S. Ambassador to demand a public retraction and apology.
“President Tinubu should summon the U.S. ambassador. They must either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime,” Gumi said.
He cautioned that failing to act decisively would project weakness and invite further foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
Gumi also advised the Tinubu administration to broaden Nigeria’s global partnerships, exploring new economic and defense alliances beyond the United States.
“There are many other nations we can partner with for economic growth and military cooperation,” he added.
Trump had earlier taken to Truth Social, his social media platform, warning that the U.S. could halt aid to Nigeria or take military steps if the government fails to stop what he termed “the killing of Christians.”
