Reuben Abati, former presidential spokesperson, has criticized the government’s decision to allocate N21 billion for renovating the president’s and vice-president’s residences amidst the current economic difficulties. Abati argued that such lavish spending is unjustifiable when many people are struggling to survive, describing it as “unacceptable and tone-deaf.” He stressed that leaders should prioritize the welfare of the citizens and make their own sacrifices in challenging times.
He remarked, “How can they justify spending billions on renovations when people are struggling to survive? It’s unacceptable and tone-deaf. We have a cost of living crisis, and you are asking us to make sacrifices… why are you not making sacrifices?”
Abati also addressed the misuse of social media by some individuals lacking empathy, cautioning against regulating it. He emphasized that the government must uphold freedom of expression.
