During a television interview on Sunday, Obi argued that Kanu’s continued detention lacked both legal and moral justification. However, in response, the unnamed presidency official — who spoke to Punch under condition of anonymity — emphasized that the government would not interfere in the judicial process, insisting that Kanu’s case must proceed through the courts.
The source said, “Peter Obi has demonstrated separatist leanings. He has publicly expressed support for IPOB, yet he aspires to lead the entire nation. That’s a clear contradiction.”
He continued, “Kanu’s case is already in court. If he is found not guilty, he will be released. But if he’s found guilty, the law must take its course.”
The official stressed the importance of judicial independence, adding, “We cannot pass judgment on behalf of the court. The judiciary must be allowed to do its job. Once the trial concludes, only then can further discussions take place. The state is trying to prove its case — if it fails, Kanu walks free. If it succeeds, he faces the consequences.”
