Veteran actor and Military Relations Senior Assistant to the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Mr. Steve Eboh, known affectionately as Ajebo, has shared chilling insights into the boat accident that claimed the lives of Nollywood actor Jnr. Pope and four others at Anam River, Anambra State. Eboh, who was involved in the production of the ill-fated movie ‘Another Side of Life’ alongside Adanma Luke, recounted the tragic event and the efforts made to manage the situation.
The devastating incident has reverberated throughout the Nigerian film industry, prompting Eboh to provide clarity amidst various narratives circulating about the accident. Meanwhile, the Marine Police of Anambra State Command announced the recovery of the remaining three victims’ bodies. Commissioner of Police CP Aderemi Adeoye emphasized the importance of safety for water commuters and pledged a thorough investigation into the incident.
Eboh detailed how the accident unfolded, revealing that he narrowly missed being on the ill-fated boat himself. He attributed the mishap to actor TC Okafor’s actions, alleging that Okafor’s activities obstructed the boat’s navigation, resulting in a collision with an oncoming canoe.
Moreover, Eboh disclosed that the movie’s producer, Adanma Luke, narrowly avoided being on the boat due to a last-minute errand. Tragically, efforts to revive the victims proved futile, despite initial hopes sparked by rituals performed by the riverside. Eboh lamented the absence of life jackets among the passengers, highlighting the negligence of some boat drivers and the pressure for content creation as contributing factors.
Looking ahead, Eboh emphasized the importance of ensuring the satisfaction of all involved parties. He conveyed the profound sorrow felt by producer Adanma Luke and underscored the need for industry-wide reflection on safety measures.
The Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Jnr. Pope and Kannywood actress Saratu Gidado within a span of three days. Describing the deaths as tragic, she extended condolences to the families and underscored the industry’s collective grief at the loss of promising talents.
