Armoured vehicle dealers, interviewed by The PUNCH, affirmed a surge in sales of customised bulletproof Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) as the kidnapping epidemic intensifies. Armed gangs, operating from various forests, have been infiltrating major cities, conducting abductions, and demanding exorbitant ransoms in recent weeks.

In response to the worsening security situation, victims and families of abducted individuals are resorting to crowdfunding for ransom, despite warnings from the Federal Government and the police about the potential exacerbation of the kidnap-for-ransom crisis.

Prominent and wealthy individuals are reportedly enhancing their personal and family security by investing in customised armoured vehicles, as confirmed by Mr Haresh Jethmalanito, Sales Manager at Inkas Armoured Vehicle Manufacturing Nigeria. Jethmalanito highlighted a significant increase in demand, attributing it to the deteriorating security conditions in the country. However, he lamented challenges such as high customs duties and fluctuating foreign exchange rates impacting their business.

Mark Burton, the President of Armor Max Vehicles, also acknowledged the rising demand for armoured vehicles, with prices ranging from $35,000 to $90,000. He cited currency challenges as a significant obstacle, noting that the costs had escalated due to fluctuations in the naira-to-dollar exchange rate.

Tonye Edwin, Managing Director of Globaton Services Ltd, reported a higher demand for armoured vehicles in December, particularly from individuals traveling to the South-East. He mentioned that the increased demand had resulted in a surge in vehicle prices.

As the security challenge persists, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has pledged support to security agencies in addressing the kidnapping crisis. Aminu Maida, Vice Chairman of the NCC, expressed the commission’s commitment to enhancing the technological capabilities of security agencies to combat abductions. Maida also vowed to sanction telecommunication firms and individuals involved in illegal SIM card registrations, emphasizing the need to address data security breaches and improper reallocation of SIM cards.

In conclusion, the rising prevalence of kidnappings in Nigeria is driving a heightened demand for armoured vehicles among the elite, despite challenges such as increased costs and currency fluctuations. The NCC is also taking steps to collaborate with security agencies and impose sanctions to tackle illegal activities related to SIM cards.
