Rivers Crisis: Governor Fubara Appoints 23 CTC Chairpersons, RSHA Commences Nominee Screening

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has nominated caretaker chairmen for the 23 local government areas in the state. This move follows the expiration of the current chairmen’s terms on Monday, June 17. The governor submitted the list of nominees to the state House of Assembly, which is led by factional Speaker Victor Jumbo.

The announcement was made public in a statement released Tuesday night by the Clerk of the House, G.M. Gillis-West.

The governor’s nominees for caretaker chairmen include: Madigai Dickson for Abua/Odua LGA, Happy Benneth for Ahoada East LGA, Mr. Daddy John Green for Ahoada West LGA, Otonye Briggs for Akuku Toru LGA, Reginald Ekaan for Andoni LGA, Orolosoma Amachree for Asari Toru LGA, Alabota Anengi Barasua for Bonny LGA, Anthony Soberekon for Degema LGA, Brain Gokpa for Eleme LGA, David Omereji for Emouha LGA, John Otamiri for Etche LGA, Kenneth Kpeden for Gokana LGA, Darlington Orji for Ikwerre LGA, Marvin Yobana for Khana LGA, Chijioke Ihunwo for Obia/Akpor LGA, Princewill Ejekwe for Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA, Evans Bipi for Ogu/Bolo LGA, Princess Ogan for Okrika LGA, Promise Reginald for Omuma LGA, Enyiada Cookey-Gam for Opobo/Nkoro LGA, Gogo Philip for Oyigbo LGA, Ichemati Ezebunwo for Port Harcourt LGA, and Matthew Dike for Tai LGA.

Tensions escalated on Tuesday as the outgoing local government chairmen refused to vacate their seats. The situation intensified when youths loyal to Governor Fubara forcefully took over local government councils, removing chairmen who were unwilling to leave.

A violent clash at the Eberi-Omuma secretariat in Omuma Local Government Area resulted in the death of a policeman. The clash involved supporters of Governor Fubara and those of his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has started screening the nominees presented by the governor. In his letter to Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, Governor Fubara emphasized that the screening and confirmation of the committee members are essential to prevent a governance vacuum following the expiration of the elected chairmen’s terms on Monday.
