Rivers Governor Fubara Takes Aim At IGP Over Election Issues

Governor Fubara arrived at the RISIEC premises around 1 a.m. alongside government officials, reacting to reports that officers previously stationed to secure the facility had been withdrawn and replaced by a new police unit. Fubara was visibly angered, criticizing the IGP for what he described as an unjustified deployment of police forces.

The Governor accused the police of overstepping their authority, highlighting that a court ruling only restricted access to the voter register but did not prohibit the scheduled elections. He insisted the elections would proceed, even without police security.

“We came here this morning because we heard the Nigerian police had taken over the premises of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, and I came personally to find out why this is happening,” Fubara said. “One Deputy Commissioner of Operations reportedly withdrew the officers who were protecting this place and replaced them with others. I have to say this strongly—we’ve had enough of this nonsense from this institution. The court ruling never said elections shouldn’t hold; it only restricted access to the voter register.”

Fubara further questioned the relationship between the IGP and certain powerful individuals in the state, accusing the police of acting outside their professional duties. He emphasized that even if the Federal High Court ruling was in place, it did not call for a ban on elections.

“We don’t need police security. We will provide our own, just like in Anambra. This election must go on, results will be declared, and people will be sworn in,” the Governor added. “This has to stop, especially when it concerns Rivers State. Enough is enough.”

Fubara ended by warning the IGP, asserting his authority over state matters: “This is my property, and you have no power to stop me from entering it. If I hear anything else, I’ll come here myself. Your legacy will include this if you continue, and I won’t hold back anymore.”

He reassured Rivers residents that the election would proceed as planned, regardless of the challenges.
