Oye Fasua, a former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State, has cautioned Rivers State’s suspended Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, against pursuing legal action against President Bola Tinubu. In a statement released in Lagos, Fasua criticized the politicians encouraging Fubara to challenge the six-month emergency rule in court, claiming they were doing more harm than good. He reminded Fubara that no governor has ever successfully taken legal action against the presidency when emergency rule was invoked in Nigeria, with most simply accepting the decision and waiting for the emergency period to end.

Fasua drew historical parallels, citing how political figures like Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, Femi Pedro, Akinwunmi Ambode, Rauf Aregbesola, and even Yemi Osinbajo faced political setbacks due to disloyalty to their political mentors.

“This is not a battle Fubara can win,” Fasua declared, acknowledging the possibility that the emergency rule might be unconstitutional but emphasizing its potential necessity to prevent chaos in Rivers State.

He advised Fubara to reflect on his political journey, reconsider his approach, and seek reconciliation with those who helped him attain power. Fasua warned that pursuing a confrontation with the Federal Government could have severe consequences, including a life sentence, and mentioned accusations from Fubara’s former aides regarding the destruction of oil installations.

Fasua also underscored the importance of political loyalty, citing examples like Mudasiru Obasa, Babatunde Fashola, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and Biodun Oyebanji, who all benefitted from loyalty. He urged Fubara to swallow his pride, reconcile with his political allies, and avoid litigation, as the path to peace and political success lies in maturity, not legal battles.

“Anyone advising Fubara to go to court is not helping him—they are ruining his political future,” Fasua concluded
