Rivers In Turmoil: Police Finger Top Govt Officials In Brutal LGA Boss Assault
The Rivers State Police Command has implicated two senior officials of the Ahoada East Local Government Area—the Chief Security Officer, Hector Ekakita, and the Council’s Chief of Staff—in orchestrating the violent assault on the LGA’s Sole Administrator, Goodluck Iheamnacho, last Friday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, alleged that Ekakita and the Chief of Staff led a group of over 30 thugs to the council secretariat. There, the assailants reportedly beat up Iheamnacho, stripped him of his personal belongings, and forced him to sign a resignation letter.
According to the police, Iheamnacho suffered injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment. “The attackers also stole his mobile phones and made away with both official and personal documents from his office,” the statement said.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene along with top security officials and has directed Ekakita, the Chief of Staff, and all other implicated individuals to report to the State Police Headquarters for interrogation. He warned that failure to comply would result in serious consequences, affirming the command’s resolve to uphold law and order.
Residents were urged to remain peaceful and cooperate with authorities as investigations continue.
Tensions escalated further after a resignation letter, allegedly signed by Iheamnacho, surfaced online, suggesting a voluntary exit. However, Iheamnacho swiftly refuted the claim, asserting that he was coerced into signing the document under threat during the assault.
The incident comes amid broader political unrest in Rivers State. The 23 local government areas are currently being run by Sole Administrators appointed under an emergency arrangement, most of whom are believed to be loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
