Rooted deeply in the rich heritage of the Egba people, this year’s Lisabi Festival drew a massive crowd as it paid homage to Lisabi, the fearless hero who freed the Egba from the domination of the Oyo Empire in the late 1700s.
With the theme ‘Ègbáliganza 2025’, the event beautifully blended cultural pride with modern elegance, offering a vibrant tribute to Egba history while embracing stylish contemporary expressions.
The festival’s grand finale featured a breathtaking fashion parade that celebrated traditional Egba styles, showcasing the elegance of Ofi, Adire, and other Afrocentric designs. The audience was captivated by the rich textures, bold colors, and intricate patterns that embodied the beauty of Egba culture.
Dignitaries, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, graced the event in regal attires like aso-oke and flowing agbadas, lending prestige to the celebration. Other notable attendees included Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ladi Adebutu of the PDP, and Nollywood icon Richard Mofe-Damijo.
Adding royal splendor to the occasion, the Alake of Egbaland and his high chiefs appeared in majestic traditional regalia, complete with coral beads, symbolizing the enduring cultural legacy of the Egba people.
Lisabi Agbongbo Akala’s legendary role between 1775 and 1780 marked a turning point in Egba history. A visionary leader and strategic warrior, Lisabi led a successful revolt that ended the Egba’s subjugation and tribute payment to the Alaafin of Oyo, paving the way for Egba self-determination.
