Despite being outgunned, the residents of Izge, joined by local vigilantes and hunters, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the soldiers to push back the invaders.
Following heavy losses, the militants were forced to retreat, evacuating the bodies of their dead fighters from the scene.
A local resident, Mallam Isa Usman, shared the terrifying ordeal: “They struck at 1 a.m. when we were mostly asleep. Sadly, a Captain and a Corporal lost their lives. But many of the terrorists were gunned down. Those who survived fled, carrying their casualties.”
Reacting to the attack, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, voiced serious concern over the persistent Boko Haram threats in his constituency. While praising the military’s resilience, he urged the federal government to step up its efforts by deploying high-tech equipment such as drones to aid the fight.
“The government must properly equip and motivate our armed forces with advanced technology to finally put an end to this over-decade-long insurgency. Doing so will also help tackle other challenges like banditry and kidnapping,” Ndume stated.
He also lauded the courage of the Izge community, whose timely support was key to repelling the terrorists and recovering looted weapons and ammunition.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, were unsuccessful. However, Gwoza Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abba Kawu Idrissa Timta, confirmed the attack. He noted that although the exact number of military casualties remains unclear, a large number of insurgents were neutralized during the encounter.
As the nation grapples with growing security challenges, the federal government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is being urged to significantly strengthen the capabilities of Nigeria’s military and security forces to effectively combat terrorism and restore peace across troubled regions.
