Russia Accuses Western Countries Of Undermining Ties With Nigeria During ProtestsThe Russian Government has accused the United States and the United Kingdom of attempting to undermine its relationship with Nigeria by associating the country with the August 1 hunger protests.

This assertion was made in a letter addressed to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Yury Paramonov, the Press Secretary of the Russian embassy in Nigeria, on Friday in Abuja.

During the protests, some demonstrators were seen waving Russian flags and chanting slogans, while others displayed placards with various messages.

Russia has also faced allegations of involvement in political unrest in several West African nations, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, raising concerns about external interference in regional issues. In response, Russia claimed that the U.S., U.K., and Ukraine were linking it to the protests in a bid to damage its amicable relationship with Nigeria, urging the Nigerian government to dismiss these accusations.

Paramonov noted that the embassy had conveyed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Nigeria’s National Day. He pointed out that statements from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former Director of the British Council in Nigeria David Roberts, and Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria Ivan Kholostenko had “shamelessly and baselessly” suggested that the presence of Russian flags during the protests indicated interference from Russia and warned of potential future incidents.

“The Embassy categorically rejects such accusations and reiterates that the Russian Federation had no involvement in the recent protests nor does it have any connection to any future demonstrations or unrest,” Paramonov stated.

He emphasized that Russia has always respected Nigeria’s sovereignty and adheres to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of independent nations. The embassy extended its best wishes for prosperity and stability to the Nigerian government and people and expressed hope for continued cooperation and strengthened relations between the two countries.
